Raised Garden Beds Explained: Why a Steel Planter Box Beats Digging Up Your Lawn

My neighbour spent a whole Saturday last spring trying to dig a vegetable patch into her backyard. Clay soil, tree roots, a sore back by lunchtime — and she still had to fix the drainage before anything would grow. Two weekends later she had a steel raised garden bed sitting on top of the same spot, filled with proper soil, and was planting tomatoes by afternoon tea. That’s the whole pitch for raised beds in one story.

If you’ve never used one, a raised garden bed is basically a bottomless box that sits on your existing ground and holds a deep layer of good soil above it. No digging, no fighting with whatever’s underneath your lawn, and no bending all the way to the dirt to weed or pick. It sounds simple because it is — but there’s a right way to set one up if you want it to actually work.

How a raised garden bed actually works

The bed itself doesn’t need a floor. It sits directly on soil, grass, gravel or even a slightly sloped yard, and gravity plus drainage does the rest. Water moves down through the soil, through the open base, and away into the ground below. That’s why raised beds drain so much better than a hole dug straight into compacted clay — the water has somewhere to go instead of sitting around plant roots and rotting them.

Height matters more than people expect. A bed that’s only 15-20cm deep is fine for lettuce and herbs, but root vegetables, tomatoes and anything with a decent root system want more depth. Why steel over timber or plastic

Timber beds look nice for the first couple of years, then they start to warp, split or rot where the soil sits wet against the wood. Plastic ones are light and cheap but they crack in the sun and can look tired within a season or two. Powder-coated steel doesn’t have either problem. It handles Australian summers without warping, doesn’t rot from constant soil moisture, and the green finish on this model sits neatly against grass or gravel rather than standing out like a bright plastic tub.

Working out how much soil you’ll need

This is the question we get asked most, so here’s the maths for the 400x80x44cm bed. Multiply length by width by height in metres: 4m x 0.8m x 0.44m = roughly 1.4 cubic metres of soil at a full fill.

In practice you don’t need to fill it flat to the rim, and most gardeners layer the bottom 10-15cm with coarser material — pruned branches, straw, or even the offcuts from setting up the garden — before topping with quality garden mix. This is sometimes called “lasagne gardening” and it saves you buying premium soil for the whole depth, since roots mostly work the top 25-30cm anyway.

  • Bottom layer (10-15cm): sticks, leaves, straw, or coarse mulch for drainage and slow-release nutrients
  • Middle layer (15-20cm): compost mixed with garden soil
  • Top layer (10-15cm): quality vegetable garden mix for seedlings and seeds

Positioning it so it actually gets used

Most vegetables want six hours of direct sun, so morning-to-afternoon sun on the north or east side of the yard usually works best in most Australian climates. Keep it within reach of a hose or tap — a bed that’s a hassle to water gets neglected by January, no matter how good it looked in October.

At 80cm wide, this bed lets you reach the centre from either long side without stepping in, which matters more than people think. A narrower bed means less compaction from standing on the soil, and that keeps roots happier long-term.

Raised beds versus other steel garden structures

A raised garden bed isn’t the only steel structure worth having in a backyard, and it’s worth knowing where each one fits. On the smaller end, if you’re working with a balcony or a courtyard fence rather than open ground, corten steel wall planters mount directly onto a wall or railing and use a fraction of the soil and space a full raised bed needs. They’re a good option for herbs and small flowering plants when you don’t have backyard ground to work with at all.

A few things that trip people up

  • Skipping the base prep: even without a floor, it helps to lay down cardboard or weed matting first if grass or weeds are underneath, so they don’t grow up through your new soil.
  • Filling with pure topsoil: straight topsoil compacts hard over a season. Mix in compost so water and air can still move through it.
  • Ignoring wind: an empty steel bed is light enough to shift in strong wind before it’s filled. Position it and start filling the same day if you can.
  • Overcrowding: the 400x80cm footprint looks huge empty but fills up fast once tomatoes, zucchini and herbs are all in together. Leave proper spacing per plant tag, not just what looks tidy on day one.

Once it’s filled and planted, a steel raised bed is close to maintenance-free — no repainting, no re-staining, no replacing rotted boards in three years. Top up the soil each season as it settles, rotate what you grow so the same nutrients aren’t stripped every year, and it’ll keep producing long after a timber version would’ve needed rebuilding.
